American Nephrology Nurses Association ~ Statement on Recent Events of Racism and Nursing's Roles

ANNA Board of Directors Addresses the Recent Events of Racism and Nursing's Roles

The American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) stands in solidarity with our members and the patients for whom we provide care, whose health and well-being are threatened by long-standing inequality stemming from racism and injustice. ANNA recognizes that patient populations impacted by racism and injustice often are also the same populations at an increased risk of developing kidney disease. In spite of these challenges, and recently in the face of a pandemic, nephrology nurses show up to provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients, acknowledging the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person without prejudice.

ANNA stands by our mission to improve members’ lives through education, advocacy, networking, and science. This mission is based on an ANNA core belief that includes embracing and nurturing diversity in all its dimensions and is put into action via the ANNA Strategic Plan, a published Nondiscrimination in Education Programs Position Statement, education and funding to support advocacy efforts, and educational scholarships and research grants to advance learning and nursing science.

As nephrology nurses, we will continue to be steadfast in striving for fair and equal workplace environments, education, and professional development opportunities. As nurses, we will speak up and advocate for individuals entrusted to our care. ANNA is listening and together we will work to create systems that support advancement and equality for all, while recognizing there is further work to be accomplished by the association and in collaboration with our nursing and kidney community colleagues.
